I am Croatian, but was American raised and born. I went to Croatia for the first time in June/July 2009 to visit all of my relatives in Split and Imotski Croatia. We ate all of what you see on this page, but one of the most delicious meals that we had was called SAC'.

It is made of meat and potatoes placed in a large pan about 12 inches in diameter and 2-3 inches deep and placed in a stone or brick bulilding over hot coals and covered with a metal plate that comes down from the ceiling of the building. It cooks for about 45 minutes and is only made for special occasions...ours was a specail one indeed...we had three of these meals made for us while there :)

Yummy is the only word I can think of to describe this meal!!!!!!!!!

thank you very much for your contribution about SAC and the picture!

I admit it - I don't really know if I ever tasted this delicious meal (the diversity of dishes in Croatia is fantastic - if you ask me).

And meeting your relatives in Split was definitely the right occasion :-)

i am a canadian and my family is from the zadar region. when i last visited, a relative prepared veal buried in the coals for hours and not only was the organic veal amazing so was the cooking process, best i ever had. unfortunately our veal raised here, even organic doesnt even come close to theirs. another great meal i always remember but hard to come by due to no longer being able to harvest was the prsnaci (mussel like clam found in growing inside rocks), it has been a longtime, but will never forget enjoyment of eating them and harvesting was a amazing experience. my love of food is always linked to my visits to croatia and i look forward to visiting sometime again.

An update to a post I made a long time ago.

I have come to know that SAC' is also called PEKA.

Eventually I will make the same kind of cooking space outside of my home in order to make this fantastic meal myself here in the states.
