Day Trips to Slovenia

Home > Map of Croatia > Day Trips to Slovenia

Although you would need 1001 holidays to cover everything worth seeing in Croatia, don't miss some day trips to Slovenia, its northern neighbour.

Whether you're spending your holiday in one of the Croatian cities or islands and you want to make some optional trips, whether you're taking a complete tour of both countries, a day in Slovenia is definitely a good opportunity to explore even more beauty.

Slovenia has a lot to offer:

  • from the Mediterranean classics to the fantastic karst caves,
  • the charming Ljubljana,
  • the green oasis of Pohorje
  • or the postcard images of snow-topped Julian Alps.

The best starting point from your Slovenia exploring is either Istria area, or Zagreb. It only depends on what you're going to visit.

What about a day trip to Ljubljana?

If you're visiting Zagreb, your next stop in Slovenia would definitely be Ljubljana. A charming medieval city, oozing of history, set by the river Ljuljanica, Ljubljana will steal your heart from the first sight!

Your steps will guide you through romantic streets right to the fantastic mix of medieval, baroque and art nouveau monuments in the centre of the city.

If you're a classic music passionate, you'll be interested to find out that Ljubljana hosts the world's second philharmonic society, and also here is the place where Gustav Mahler started his career. Ljubljana will very much remind you of Vienna of Prague, and this is not by chance. Most Slovenia's capital charm has the signature of the architect Joze Plecnik, who left his mark on many of the central Europe's buildings.

If you want to combine the classic beauties of Zagreb with a fresh breath from the mountains air, take a day trip at Bled in Slovenia - the most popular resort in the Slovenian Alps. Your camera will love the dramatic image of the medieval castle set on 130 meters high rock, mirroring in the green calm waters of Lake Bled, and guarded by the snow-topped Alps.

And this is not all!

What about making an incursion in the traditional villages of Julian Alps' Upper Valley, where you can buy some ecologic products, visiting the St. John Baptist church, then taking a cable car ride on the Lower Valley, to the mount Vogel, where you can enjoy a wonderful panorama of the Julian Alps reflecting in the Lake Bohinj.

The Postojna cave system - a real treasure...

If you decide to visit Croatia's neighbour, don't miss the fantastic Postojna Cave System, one of the most spectacular day trips in Slovenia.

These caves covers a total of 21 kilometres, offering a great deal for adventure travel. The magic of Postojna rests in its beautiful and irregular stalactite and stalagmite formations, and the mysterious "human fish" Proteus Anguinus, a creature living only underground.

You can start this day trip from Pula in Istria, or you can integrate it in a two-days trip covering Zagreb and its surroundings.

If you're a horse lover, and you decide for a day trip in the Slovenian karst region, don't miss the Lipica Stud Farm, founded by Austria in 1580, today worldwide renown - lovely horses, savage landscape and horse-riding lessons will make your day.

By car, by train or simply cycling, in the mountains or following the history traces in the big cities, the day trips to Slovenia will definitely enrich your adventure in Croatia!
