Getting from Zagreb to Split or Dubrovnik to Split

We are planning an island hopping adventure in 9-2011.
We are trying to think to fly into Zagreb or Dubrovnik to take public transportation to Split.
Any suggestions? Would one city be easier to get to Split than another?

first of all - I think that September is an ideal month to do an "island hopping" trip in Croatia. Why? High season is over and you usually don't have crowded beaches etc.
As for your question:
I don't know how your flight to Croatia looks like. Maybe you are going for a stop in Frankfurt, Germany... From here chances are good that you can get a flight via German Wings or so and arrive at the Split airport directly (Split has it's own airport - but it's a smaller one so that most larger aircrafts from the USA aren't able to land there).
Here's an article with the airports in Croatia:Croatia airports
My thoughts about landing in Dubrovnik:
Dubrovnik itself is one of the top spots of Croatia and you could easily spend one or two days there.
Also, if you take the bus from Dubrovnik to Split you would be able to see beautiful parts of the coast because of the awesome coast road (some breathtaking views are guaranteed!).
But the distance is longer to Split.
My thoughts about landing in Zagreb:
Zagreb is also a fantastic city with historical buildings and a lot of things to do and see.
From Zagreb (capital of Croatia) you have an excellent connection to Split
because of the "highway". Public transportation is also no problem and relatively cheap.
All in all I would personally try to land in Dubrovnik and have a bit more of an "adventure".
If you just want to get to the islands as quickly as possible - take Zagreb.
Please note: The majority of flights are still going to Zagreb - Dubrovnik has a smaller airport.
Ok, so this are my personal thoughts.
Hope that helps!
All the best,
